Favicons are the small images which appear in the tab for an open webpage at the top of a web browser page.

To make a favicon, you need a programme to convert an image to an .ico formatted image. To do this from Photoshop or other image editor, you need to download a plug-in, which is easy to find for your OS system and programme version.

Place this file in your Photoshop Plug-ins folder: ICOFormat.8bi

To load a favicon, use this code in the head section:

<link rel="Shortcut Icon" href="http://www.sciencelibrary.info/favicon.ico?v=2" type="image/gif" />

The ?v=2 extension ensures a forced reload of the favicon for browsers which stubbornly cache the favicon.

The image should be 16 px x 16 px in size, and the best results are obtained by restricting the number of colours to 2 or 3, with sharp contrast and easily recognisable shape.

Quote of the day...

As far as the laws of mathematics refer to reality, they are not certain; and as far as they are certain, they do not refer to reality.
